Genioplasty: Chin Enhancements and Implants

At Sandia Oral Surgery, we want you to feel great about your appearance and confident in your body which is why we proudly offer treatments that provide the look you’ve always dreamed of. Dr. Tuggle understands the value of a strong, well-defined chin for both men and women and uses surgical techniques to improve both the size and the shape of the chin.

What is genioplasty?

Genioplasty is the medical term for surgery that alters the shape and size of a chin and improves contours of the chin, neck, and jawline. If you are looking for more balanced facial features, a chin enhancement could be the ideal solution. During a simple procedure, we can either move your chin to the desired position and fix it in place with screws or place chin implants.

What are my options?

There are several types of genioplasty. Dr. Tuggle can:

  • Advance your chin forward if it is recessed.
  • Push your chin back if it juts out.
  • Move your chin to the side to increase symmetry.
  • Remove or add bone to increase or decrease the length of your chin.
  • Add an implant to your chin bone.

What does the process of adjusting my chin bone entail?

Dr. Tuggle cuts the chin bone away from the rest of the jaw and moves it to the desired location. This procedure is called osteomy and can be used to increase or decrease the profile projection of the chin. We take pride in tailoring your surgery to your unique needs, as we assess facial balance and your desired goals.

Does genioplasty hurt?

No! Genioplasty is normally performed under general anesthesia, so you will be completely comfortable. You may experience swelling or slight discomfort as you heal the first week. We provide all necessary aftercare instructions. Taking any prescribed pain medications will keep you ahead of any possible pain, and Dr. Tuggle is always available should you have any difficulty or concern.

Enhancing the Jawline with Chin Implants

Today’s chin implants not only enhance bone structure and overall aesthetics, but they contribute to a well-defined jawline which brings facial balance and harmony.

How does chin implant surgery work?

Dr. Tuggle makes a small incision under the chin or inside the mouth, creating a space to place the implant around the chin bone. This is a simple procedure that normally takes less than an hour. Once the surgery has been completed, Dr. Tuggle close the incision with sutures.

Does implant surgery hurt?

No. We administer general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to ensure our patients are comfortable. Chin implant surgery is an outpatient procedure.

What is recovery like?

Because a chin implants requires no bone cutting, recovery is comparatively quick and comfortable. Dr. Tuggle will provide you with aftercare instructions that require you to sleep facing up at a slightly elevated height for the first couple weeks after surgery to reduce swelling and promote healing. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities with a week and strenuous exercise within a month.

How long does a chin implant last?

Although we age and our appearance changes, chin implants are designed to last forever. Unless there is trauma to the face, these strong and durable medical devices should never need to be replaced.

Why should I get a chin implant?

There are many ways in which a chin augmentation can improve your appearance. Specifically, chin implants can:

  • Strengthen a weak or recessed chin.
  • Improve neck and jawline definition.
  • Reduce the appearance of a double chin caused by a small chin bone.
  • Create a more balanced profile.
  • Reduce a deep fold under the lower lip.
  • Widen a small chin.
  • Improve facial harmony by pulling chin into proper proportion with other features.
